T9 oddities

My Nokia 8310i knows how to spell Freud but doesn’t recognize Faust. Does this mean something significant?

Asylum seekers

Here’s a little gem of journalistic skill I found in G2 today.

”It’s just about standards of living,” says Tremaine Bashford, herself from Priory estate, who works for the council advising local community groups and residents’ associations. ”The problem is that the government sets a basic standard of living for asylum seekers, and it’s nothing to do with the council. […] The stanrdard of living is actually better than some of the people in that area.” One might argue that if a housing estate can make asylum seekers look wealthy by comparison, it is not the asylum seekers who are the problem.

Innit so?

Easy steps

The magazine Men’s Health (no, I did not buy it, just leafed over it at Winnie’s) had an article called ”27 easy steps to health”. Now, if something has 27 steps, it is not easy.

Win-win situation

Yay! I bought a second-hand book from Amazon but turns out they don’t have the title so they refunded the purchase. The nice thing is that I paid 9,80 € but the refund was 9,86 €. Sheer profit!

Candy

When I was a kid, ten years old or so, I bought huge amounts of candy on two separate occasions. I distinctly remember six things about these moments of abundance.

First: I had to break the piggy bank with a typewriter to get enough money.

Second: I didn’t dare buy candy with all that money (50 marks, I reckon) at one place cos they might suspect something, so I did the shopping at two kiosks.

Third: On one occasion there was so much candy that the clerk couldn’t even tie the bags shut.

Fourth: I put all the candy in one huge bag, sat on it, and pretended to lay eggs ie. candy, which my friends would then go get.

Fifth: We played Afrikan tähti by replacing the tokens with candy.

Six: I never told my parents.

Brain colouring

Take a look at this picture of a man with a flag painted on his face. Now think what the colours of that flag are.

You decided yet?

This is not a trick question, just a little something I noticed in myself. See, upon looking at the picture I immediately pictured it in blue and white, ie. the colours of the Finnish flag. But actually this picture accompanied the review of a book about English nationality. Of course I knew that all along before I even took a good look at the picture (not to mention that the proportions are all wrong for it to be the Finnish flag), and still… Fascinating.

Notes

It was raining tonight, a warm little spring rain. Walking through the near empty streets, looking at reflections of lights in the ponds felt good.

Earlier I picked up Carrie and Boogie Nights on DVD just for a tenner. A good deal, even if I say so myself.

What a nice day

Spent the day doing literally nothing else but poopin’ and gogglin’. First there was Dumbo, then I went out for today’s paper, then watched Misery, ate in the middle, then finished Lost In La Mancha on DVD, after which C4 broadcast Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I also managed to squeeze in a few trips to the upstairs loo and leaf through some magazines during that. Frankly I could think of much worse ways of spending one’s holidays.

Thumbprint

Earlier today the clerk at Spar (indirectly) told me that I have a weird fingerprint.
