  • Why can't we concentrate? (Salon) – In many cases, the thing we wish we would do is not only more interesting but ultimately more fun than the things we do instead, and yet it seems to require a Herculean effort to make ourselves do it.
  • Internet Memes – siisti skrollattava timeline
  • Katsaus The Onionin bisnesmeininkeihin (AdAge) – That's the odd part. If you were to look up our media audit — which you're probably not going to do — our readership grew even though we took circulation down. The pass-around factor for The Onion is pretty huge.

The fact is that print, despite what we did this week in those two places, is a really good business for us. It's a very solid, nice chunk of cash. I personally think that there's room for us to grow the print business. Some of my younger colleagues don't agree with me.

  • The highs and lows of Auto-Tune – The most important piece of musical equipment of the last 10 years is not an instrument or a physical object. It’s called Auto-Tune and is used on roughly 90 per cent of all pop songs. It is what’s known as a ‘plug-in’, a specialized piece of software made to be inserted into other, bigger pieces of audio software. Auto-Tune bends off-key notes into pitch perfection.
  • Oliver Blank – We Were Walking In The Rain EP

Word 265: Myrmidon

It is true that Cheney and his myrmidons did use torture (while carefully avoiding the term itself) as a campaign platform.

myrmidon (n) 1: a follower who carries out orders without question; 2: (Greek mythology) a member of the warriors who followed Achilles on the expedition against Troy – source: Alex Gibney: First Blog

Elinikäinen duuni Yhdysvalloissa

Jo joskus aiemminkin sattui silmään muotoilu lehdistön työsuhteen kestävyydestä Yhdysvalloissa:

A simple compromise on lifetime job guarantees is the right answer to breaking the impasse between the Boston Globe and its largest union, the Boston Newspaper Guild. The compromise would be for the union to abandon the archaic concept of preserving lifetime jobs for its most senior members.

Voisiko joku paikallista työelämää paremmin tunteva valaista, miten laajalle levinnyt kyseinen käytäntö oikein on ja mikä sen historia on? Kuulostaa nimittäin aika hurjalta.

Word 264: Timorous

In the weeks following the attacks, L.A. swung between self-aggrandizing bouts of breast-beating, slight disappointment that nobody had thought to target Los Angeles, and meek avowals toward the new public mood, complicated only by the fact that nobody knew what that mood was – Timorous? Defiant? Vengeful? Somber? Sanguine?

timorous (adj) : timid by nature or revealing timidity [syn: fearful, trepid] – source: Tom Shone: Blockbuster (2004)

  • Conde Nast to close Portfolio – uusi talouslehti + nykyinen taloustilanne = auts
  • The underground world of neuroenhancing drugs (New Yorker) – Adderall, a stimulant composed of mixed amphetamine salts, is commonly prescribed for children and adults who have been given a diagnosis of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. But in recent years Adderall and Ritalin, another stimulant, have been adopted as cognitive enhancers: drugs that high-functioning, overcommitted people take to become higher-functioning and more overcommitted. (Such use is “off label,” meaning that it does not have the approval of either the drug’s manufacturer or the Food and Drug Administration.) College campuses have become laboratories for experimentation with neuroenhancement
  • God Is Back -kirjan arvostelu (NY Times) – The market that niche religious leaders stepped into was the hole opened up by modernity, and their product was something the authors call “soulcraft.” Instead of raging against modern life, they sold themselves as easing the way for the harried middle class. Church became a place to form social bonds, get dates, meet fellow moms isolated in suburbia, lose weight.
  • David Foster Wallace – Commencement Speech at Kenyon College
  • Shouts & Murmurs: Amen, Brother – After a blissfully romantic courtship lasting only twelve years, Stacy and I were married. We had decided to save ourselves for our wedding night, because, as I reminded Stacy over and over, “The first time I make love to a woman, I want it to be sacred and special, and not just mindless, unending pleasure, like sex with a guy.
