• Dana Fox, Diablo Cody, Liz Meriwether & Lorene Scafaria eli The Fempire – Ms. Scafaria and Ms. Cody are usually not a duo, but half of a quartet. With their pals Dana Fox, who wrote “What Happens in Vegas,” and Liz Meriwether, a playwright-turned-screenwriter, they make up a Hollywood powerhouse writing posse who call themselves “The Fempire.”

• A. O. Scott: Neo-Neo Realism – American Directors Make Clear-Eyed Movies for Hard Times (NYT Mag) – But what if, at least some of the time, we feel an urge to escape from escapism? For most of the past decade, magical thinking has been elevated from a diversion to an ideological principle. The benign faith that dreams will come true can be hard to distinguish from the more sinister seduction of believing in lies. To counter the tyranny of fantasy entrenched on Wall Street and in Washington as well as in Hollywood, it seems possible that engagement with the world as it is might reassert itself as an aesthetic strategy. Perhaps it would be worth considering that what we need from movies, in the face of a dismaying and confusing real world, is realism.

Jalmari Finne tekee Rare Exports -lyhäreistä kokoillan elokuvan. Suomen elokuvasäätiö myönsi projektille viime vuoden joulukuussa 20 000 euroa kehittämistukea ja maaliskuussa 720 000 euroa tuotantotukea. Näyttelijäkaartikin on pysynyt ennallaan (Tommila & Korpela jne.) Ensi-iltaa kaavaillaan ensi vuoden syksylle.

Tukipäätöksistä löytyy muutama muukin hauska bongaus. Ensinnäkin genreleffoja näyttäisi olevan ainakin suunnittelussa enemmän kuin aikoihin.

• Marko Mäkilaakso, jonka zombiesotaleffa ei vieläkään ole levityksessä, sai lovecraftiaaniselta kuulostavan Night of the Witch –leffan kehittelyyn 6000 euroa. Synopsis: Nuori noitatieteen opettaja, professori John Ward, saapuu kotikaupunkiinsa Salemiin pitämään luentoa ja joutuu kohtaamaan menneisyytensä kun noita palaa kaupunkiin.
• Pekko Pesosen ja AJ Annilan kaavailema ninjamusikaali on saanut 10 000 euroa käsikirjoittamistukea. Tosin mahtaneeko Annila olla enää mukana puikoissa, kun häntä on vokoteltu ulkomaille hommiin?
• Sami Laitisen ja Kasimir Lehdon scifi-pätkä 2012 lienee valmistuessaan (jos se siis valmistuu) ensimmäinen kotimainen kokoillan 3d-leffa
• Musiikkivideoilla kunnostautunut Antti Jokinen sai 60 000 euroa kehittämistukea Nicholas of the North -elokuvalle, joka on onelinerinsä mukaan Koko perheen fantasiaelokuva jossa Nicholas North pelastaa itsensä ja koko pohjoisen kansan pahojen voimien kirouksesta.
• Viides genreleffaksi laskettava tapaus on Valkoinen peura, joka on siitä harvinainen tapaus, että se on uusintaversio. Yritin miettiä suomalaisia remakeja, mutta en keksinyt kuin kaksi: Tuntematon sotilas (Laine ja Molle) ja Juha (1937, 1956 ja 1999).

Romaanisovituksia on tulossa parikin kappaletta. Veli-Pekka Hänninen sovittaa Arto Salmisen Varastoa leffaksi ja Ville Jankeri on ohjaamassa Pussikaljaelokuvaa, jonka nimi on mediaa vaihtaessa näppärästi mukautettu.

Ihan muuten vaan kiinnostavia ovat Muukalaisen ohjanneen Jukka-Pekka Valkeapään Juoksija eli Amok-juoksu olympiavuonna 1952 (10 000 euroa käsikirjoitustukea) ja Aleksi Salmenperän Korso, jossa nuori kaveri koettaa toteuttaa epärealistista haavettaan pienessä betonilähiössä (20 000 euroa kehittämistukea).

• The Decade of the Dude (Rolling Stone) – "This whole room is kind of dude-like," Jeff Bridges says. It's a summer afternoon at Bridges' Santa Barbara, California, estate, and the 58-year-old actor is digging around his dusty garage, looking for memorabilia from The Big Lebowski. Artifacts from the movie are strewn about his Spanish-tiled house. In Bridges' recording studio — where he once cut an album with Michael McDonald — sits one of the bowling-pin hats used in the trippy dream sequence with Bridges and co-star Julianne Moore. In his office are the grimy jelly sandals that Bridges' character, a slacker called the Dude, wore for most of the film. When we walk up to the ocean-view bluff where Bridges likes to hike every day, there's the remains of a cocktail in a dirty cup. It's a Black Russian. As far as I can tell, this seems like the biggest difference between Bridges and his most enduring character, who prefers his Russians white.

• Tunteet ja elokuva – It is the job of the critic and the viewer or reader to ferret out these messages, lift them from their context within the work, reorient them into some kind of brief philosophical treatise, and take the implication of that treatise as the purpose of the film, or at least as the locus of its true worth. But this way of thinking about film diminishes the art form by reducing it to a bare bones propositional message. It ignores the spectator's experience in viewing the film, places ultimate value on the propositional content that is later distilled from that viewing, and misunderstands the function of the viewing experience in developing the film's themes and ideas. Such a mistake is commonly called the "heresy of paraphrase."
